Batman: A Socent Perspective

Last week I (along with millions of other Americans) made my way to the megaplex to spend 3 hours of my life ogling superheroes and villains on the big screen.  Maybe I've been sipping the social entrepreneurship kool-aid for too long, but I left the theatre completely frustrated with the Batman for being so annoyingly non-strategic in his crime fighting super war (that and for lowering his voice 3 octaves every time he donned a mask).  Wasn't it obvious to him that by emerging only when villains were actively terrorizing he was merely treating a symptom of the problem?  If Batman wants to actually solve any problems he needs to get systemic, to look at the big picture and address the root cause of the issue.  Clearly, the rampant poverty and mind-boggling inequality in Gotham City are the real problems here - not the disturbed villains they produce.

Of course, it's not always easy to identify root causes as most of our problems are incredibly complicated and interconnected.  Still, if the bat boy would take a cue from social entrepreneurs, well, then I suppose we'd see less Batman films.
